Gov. Abbott Names Sept. 12 Hand-in-Hand Day In Texas

Hurricane Harvey stuck the Texas coast on Friday, Aug. 23, and held the state hostage for several days before moving on. Houston alone saw over 40 inches of rain. Highways disappeared under flood waters.

When Hurricane Harvey hit on Friday, Aug. 23, Texans around the state answered the call to help those in need. Civilians grabbed their canoes, fishing boats and kayaks to help with water rescues in Houston and other communities along the coast. Musicians from around the nation answered the call too announcing benefit concerts and aid efforts to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

In light of these efforts, Governor Greg Abbott released a proclamation declaring Sept. 12, 2017, Hand-in-Hand day in the state of Texas.

“Texans are known for their can-do spirit and generous hospitality.  In devastating events such as Hurricane Harvey, we see the true nature of Texans on full display.  Our heroic first responders have done their jobs with excellence.  And time and time again, we have heard stories of neighbor helping neighbor.

But there is even more we can do.  Now that the rescues are over, the response must continue.  Thousands of Texans still need our help.

George Strait, one of the greatest ambassadors of our state, and Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief are stepping forward to provide a Texas-sized response.  It is my pleasure to commend the many musicians and individuals involved in this event for their efforts.  Through the proceeds raised, we will rebuild the Lone Star State and make it greater than ever before.

At this time, I encourage my fellow Texans to consider the many ways they can extend their hand of support to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and show their generosity to those affected by Hurricane Irma.

Therefore, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim September 12, 2017, to be Hand in Hand Day.”
