Hays County Sheriff’s Office Introduces New Plan, Assistance To Help With Animal Shelter Overcrowding

In an effort to assist the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter in the overcrowding of its facility, Sheriff Gary Cutler has implemented a new program to help reunite lost pets with their owners.

At locations where an animal has been impounded, a special sign will be placed at that location by the sheriff’s office animal control officers (ACO) that let citizens in that area know that a dog or cat was picked up and where to call to retrieve their pet.

However, before the pet is transported to the animal shelter, the ACO officer will make every attempt to locate the owner. The ACO officers are also equipped with chip readers and can identify the owners of the animals for their safe return for those that have been chipped. The signs will remain in place for up to five days.

Sheriff Cutler encourages pet owners to ensure that their pets are in a safe and secure habitat to prevent them from getting out. “It is my hope that we can reunite pets with their owners as soon as possible to help the animal shelter with their overcrowding issues as well as reducing the stress of families missing their pets.”

Sheriff Cutler is also asking Hays County citizens to consider adopting a dog or cat from the San Marcos Regional Shelter which is located at 750 River Road in San Marcos.
