Hays County SWCD Board Opens Poster, Essay Contest

By, Terra Rivers | Managing Editor

The Hays County Soil and Water Conservation District board of directors is hosting a Poster and Essay Contest for students throughout the county.

The Essay contest is open to students from 18 and under; students 12-years-old and under are eligible to participate in the poster contest.

Students 13-years-old and under must submit an essay of a maximum of 300 words; for students 14 to 18, the maximum word count is 500. The contest’s theme this year is “Where would we BEE without Pollinators?”

Submissions are due on November 22 and can be turned in to Kathryn Brady, District Conservationist with USDA-NRCS, at her office at 326 Cheatham Street, suite 102, San Marcos.

Students can also turn in their essays and posters to their teachers on November 21; Brady will collect submissions from local schools on November 22.

The prizes are $100.00 for first place, $75.00 for second and $50.00 for third place; prizes will be given to the first, second and third places in the poster contest and each of the two age divisions in the essay contest.

First place recipients will complete in the area contest; winners will have the opportunity to continue to compete up to the state level.

All entries must be typed; for full details and requirements see the contest entry forms below. For any questions contact Brady at 512-392-4050 or Kathryn.brady@usda.gov.
