Highway Racing Causes Rollover, Serious Injuries In San Marcos
On Tuesday, April 14, at 4:26 PM, the San Marcos Police Department was dispatched to a major traffic collision involving a single vehicle that had rolled, ejecting a passenger, on the West Access of IH-35 at the Posey Road Exit (199 Exit).
Multiple witnesses reported that a blue 2014 Nissan 370Z was racing another vehicle, possibly a red Camaro, southbound on IH-35 at high rates of speed.
The Nissan came off IH-35 just past the Posey Road exit where it crossed the Access Road and struck a dirt pile, launching the vehicle over 100 feet before it began rolling.
The Nissan came to rest on the Posey Road cutoff at the Access Road. The passenger was ejected about 70-feet past where the Nissan came to rest.
“Preliminary roadway evidence puts the Nissan at 81 MPH just prior to launching over the dirt piles,” said Interim Police Chief Bob Klett. “Witnesses put the vehicle at over 100 MPH on IH-35.”
The driver of the Nissan was identified as Joel Lamont Torres (DOB 05/26/1998) of San Antonio. The passenger was identified as Jerrinque Lamiya Wilson (DOB 12/03/1999) of San Antonio. Torres was wearing a seatbelt, Wilson was not.
According to Klett, “Wilson had major injuries and was transported by Hays County EMS to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle and remains in critical condition. Torres was also transported, but had superficial injuries.”
San Marcos Police arrested Torres after he was released from the hospital for Racing on Highway involving Serious Bodily Injury, a second-degree felony. He made a $15,000 bond and is out on bail.
The Collision Investigation Team is continuing to investigate.
