Austin Invites Community To Final Workshop On ABIA Master Plan Draft

The fourth and final workshop to inform the public on elements of the draft for the Austin Airport 2040 Master Plan will be held on Sept. 26, 2018.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – The fourth and final public workshop to inform the public on elements of the draft for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) 2040 Master Plan will be held on Wed., Sept. 26, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m.

As Austin’s airport experiences customer growth, there is increased demand on the existing facilities while maintaining a positive passenger experience. In 2017, more than 13.89 million people traveled through the Austin airport.

The master plan is intended to address the anticipated increase in passenger traffic for the Austin airport over the next 20 years.

At this open house, airport planners will introduce elements of the draft master plan that will be presented to Austin City Council members later this year. The draft ABIA 2040 Master Plan provides a comprehensive set of new expansion options. These include:

  • Additional 2 million square feet of new terminal/remote concourse space
  • A new outdoor plaza and concession area
  • 32 new gates
  • Additional aircraft apron, taxiways, and taxilanes
  • Congestion-relieving improvements to terminal curb drop off and pick-up
  • Addition of 11,100 on-site parking spaces
  • Roadway access and circulation improvements on the airport campus
  • Upgraded baggage handling system and baggage claim areas
  • Consolidated maintenance facilities to streamline operationsLyn, Est

As part of the 18-month master planning process, the public has been asked to provide input into the plan. At the June public workshop, citizens were asked to share their thoughts on the proposed runway, roadway and terminal alternatives that will support ABIA’s growth through an online survey. More than 250 responses were recorded.

“We have gained a lot of insight from the public and what they value in an airport,” said Lyn Estabrook, Aviation Planning and Development Division Manager. “We have kept the Austin culture and the surrounding communities in our minds as we plan for the growth of our airport.”

The final public meeting will be an open house style format featuring visual boards allowing guests to move freely through the room. Aviation staff, consultants, planners and engineers from the Master Plan Team will be available to answer questions and record feedback as it arises.
