Texas State students honored with P.E.O. Scholar Awards

SAN MARCOS – Texas State University’s Mariah Moe, an applied anthropology doctoral student from Schertz, and Andy Pinon, a geography doctoral student from Austin, have been named recipients for the 2022-2023 Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O) Scholar Awards.

The P.E.O. Scholar Awards are one-time, competitive, merit-based awards intended to recognize and encourage academic excellence and achievement by women in doctoral-level programs. The $20,000 awards provide partial support for study and research.

P.E.O. Scholars have demonstrated their ability to make significant contributions in their chosen field of study, having assumed leadership positions in university academics, scientific research, medicine, law, performing arts, international economics, history, literature, government and other demanding fields.

For the current cycle, P.E.O. selected 100 recipients out of 775 applicants. Moe and Pinon were nominated by P.E.O. Chapter HW Marble Falls.

Moe is the second doctoral student from the Department of Anthropology to have been selected as a P.E.O. Scholar, while Pinon is the third doctoral student from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies so honored. They are the fifth and sixth P.E.O. Scholar Award recipients at Texas State since 2016.

Moe was advised by Timothy Gocha, program faculty in the Department of Anthropology, with supporting letters from Kate Spradley, professor in the Department of Anthropology, and Michelle Hamilton, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology. Pinon was advised by Jennifer Jensen, professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, with supporting letters from David Butler, Texas State University System Regents’ Professor and University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography, and Don Huebner, retired senior lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.
