Although I can barely carry a tune in a bucket, during my teenage years I belonged to a church choir. I’m not sure any of us could “really” sing, but we sure enjoyed making a joyful noise, emphasis on the noise.
Not only do I recall countless good times during my choir days, I remember the words to many of the songs. Don’t be scared, there will be no video link to me singing. I will however, share the lyrics to a little ditty entitled, “Frog Kissin’.”
Do you remember in the fairy tale, how the wicked witch’s spell
Changed the handsome prince to a toad
Through the power of a potion, she handed him the notion
That he was lower than the dirt in the road
And though she left him green and warted, her evil plan was thwarted
When there chanced to happen by a young miss
Who in spite of his complexion, offered her affection
And broke the wicked curse with her kiss
Chorus:
If you’ve never been frog kissin’
Then, you don’t know what you’ve been missin’,
There’s a world of opportunity under each and every log
And if you’ve never been a charm breaker
If you’ve never been a handsome prince maker,
Just slow down, turn around, bend down, and kiss you a frog
Once upon a time ago, I was down and feeling low
Like a lonely frog in a pond
Life was just a jokin’, I was very near a croakin’
I was zapped by life’s wicked one
In the depths of my depression there came a true expression
Of a love from a lady so sweet
She gave me warm, fuzzy feelings, that was healin’
And knocked me off my little webbed feet.
There’s a happy ever after land, deep within the heart of man
Where a prince or princess abides
But all we get are glimpses of the handsome prince or princess
Cause they’re covered by a green, warty hide
And though they’re full of life’s potential, they’re lacking one essential
To enable them to shine like a star
That’s to have some guy or missus who’ll cover them with kisses
And love them while they’re just like they are.
And that’s the secret to frog kissin’,
And you can do it too if you’ll just listen,
Just slow down, turn around, bend down and kiss you a frog!
Silly lyrics? Perhaps. Do they contain some simple life truths? Absolutely. There are days, weeks, months, maybe even years where each of us feels like a green warted frog. We fail to see our value, we’re blind to our own potential, and we think no one notices or cares. Then magic occurs. Someone comes along who offers encouragement and opens our eyes to truth. There is incredible power in the human connection.
The stanza, “Through the power of a potion, she handed him the notion that he was lower than the dirt in the road” holds a treasured nugget. Although this frog was once a royal prince, someone’s deeds held sufficient power to convince him that he was worthless. How we wield our actions towards others is incredibly impactful.
Maybe you are one of those rare beings born with a double dose of self-assurance, extreme confidence, who walks through life with ease; you’ve no idea what it’s like to feel froggy. If that’s the case, then your job is to become a Frog Seeker. No doubt, there is someone within your circle who does not share your confidence; someone who could experience personal growth just by spending time with you.
While kissing real frogs is ill advised as it may result in an extreme case of warts, figurative frog kissing benefits us all.
