McCauley Wins Colleyville Speech Title For SMHS Debate Team

Debater Takes 1st Place Overall In Original Oratory; “I was pretty excited to hear my name called as the winner,” McCauley said. “My mom was super excited when I called to tell her.”

COLLEYVILLE, TX –  San Marcos High School, Junior, Christian McCauley, took on a field of 66 schools at the Colleyville Heritage Winter Invitational this past weekend, winning First Place overall in Original Oratory.

McCauley delivered his speech in two preliminary rounds, earned his way into the semi-finals, and then made it into the final championship round. He was performing, at that point, with the other five top speakers from the tournament.

McCauley has been crafting and revising his Original Oratory speech for competition, titled “Uniting The Blue Divide,” across the entire school year. His speech focuses on how to bring law enforcement and minority groups together for dialogue and community improvement.

“I was pretty excited to hear my name called as the winner,” McCauley said. “My mom was super excited when I called to tell her.”

McCauley joined 11 other members of the SMHS Debate Team at the tournament. The students competed in a variety of events, including Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Cross-Examination Debate, Public Forum Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Original Oratory.

Next up for McCauley and the rest of the team is the National Speech and Debate Association’s District tournament at the end of the month. Students that have earned their memberships into the NSDA will be competing to earn an invitation to the National Championship in June.
