Texas State Baseball Ups Recruiting Class To 14

 

The Bobcats made a run to the semifinals of the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championship, knocking off defending national champion Coastal Carolina along the way.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Baseball Coach Ty Harrington has announced that three student-athletes have joined the 2018 recruiting class.

The additional members bring TXST’s class to 14, and all newcomers hail from Texas.

Texas State is coming off a 2017 campaign where the club posted a 29-30 overall record and a 13-17 mark in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Bobcats made a run to the semifinals of the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championship, knocking off defending national champion Coastal Carolina along the way.

They are set to open the 2018 season with a three-game home series against Oklahoma State Feb. 16-18 inside Bobcat Ballpark.

Logan Layer – IF – 5-11, 180

Rowlett, Texas / Rowlett HS

Logan Layer is set to join the Bobcat family after wrapping up a four-year career at Rowlett High School. He plays for Paul Carmon and helped lead the Eagles to a bi-district championship last season. The three-year letterwinner has already been named to the All-District 10-6A team three times in his career and was honored as the 2017 district defensive player of the year. He is the son of Eric and Christy Layer. He has one older brother, Chandler.

Assistant Coach Steven Trout on Layer: “Logan can really hit, and he’s the type of player who can cover us up in a lot of positions. He can play infield, go behind the plate and catch, and I’m sure he could play the outfield if he needed to.”

Jamey Richey – IF/OF – 6-4, 185

Lindale, Texas / Lindale HS

Jamey Richey is a three-year letterwinner for Rich Sanguinetti at Lindale High School. The all-state performer has led the Eagles to 49 victories during his career, and they have increased their win total all three years. In 2017, LHS won the district 17-5A championship. Richey has been named to the All-East First Team, the all-district first team and the all-district academic team. He was also selected as the district newcomer of the year. Other sports he competes in includes football, basketball, tennis and track. He was the district champion in the mile run. He is the son of Jim and Toni Richey, and he has one older sister, Fate.

Coach Trout on Richey: “Jamey is a very athletic guy that can play both the infield and outfield. He’s a guy that can really run, and it will be fun to watch him develop and grow in our program.”

Cody Wagner – OF – 6-0, 190

Magnolia, Texas / Magnolia HS

Cody Wagner is a three-year letterwinner at Magnolia High School. He has competed for Dale Westmoreland. Wagner has been honored as a 2017 Under Armour Preseason All-American and was named to the 2017 5A Houston Area All-Star team. The all-district performer helped lead the Bulldogs to a 17-7 record last year and an appearance in the UIL State Championship tournament. He is the son of Ronnie Wagner, Christina Reuter and Galen Reuter. He also has one sister, Karli.

Coach Trout on Wagner: “Cody is a very strong, physical player who is very athletic. He is a hard worker who can hit and also go get it on defense.”
