Austin TX: The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles approved a price reduction on specialty license plates bought through the state’s official vendor, MyPlates.com.
MyPlates.com President Steve Farrar said in a news release that “price is often cited” as the main reason why more motorists have not bought the specialty license plates. The hope is that a cost cut will boost sales. Customers will see a savings of $45 on a one-year personalized plate, for example.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has also approved the introduction of a new three-year pricing option for the specialized plates.
“One of the most common lease terms for a vehicle is three years,” Farrar said. “So we wanted to offer a plate term option that could match the same period.”
The new prices took effect on Monday.
MyPlates.com is entering its second five-year contract with the state to market the specialty license plates. Since November 2009, Texans have bought more than 213,000 specialty plates from the company, generating more than $27 million for Texas’ general fund.
