Rep. Dawnna Dukes Indicted By Travis County Grand Jury

Former staff members accused Dukes of using state resources and workers for personal projects.

State Representative Dawnna Dukes announced yesterday an indictment had been returned by a Travis County Grand Jury.

Dukes has been accused by former staff members of using state resources and employees for personal projects. The Texas Rangers presented the findings of a criminal investigation on Dukes’s behavior to the Travis County District Attorney’s office in April.

Rep. Dukes announced in September that she would be retiring in light of the investigation. However, Dukes was re-elected in the November election and sworn in for her 12th term on Jan. 10.

In a statement posted to facebook, Dukes said the indictment was disappointing but not unexpected. She has hired a Houston law firm to represent her for the case.

Dukes has been charged with one count of tampering with government records and two counts of abuse of official capacity. She says she intends to plea not guilty and will have no further comment on the allegations throughout the case.
