San Marcos was nationally recognized for its affordable cost of living, low rate of serious crime and its access to the San Marcos River and Texas State University. In its new list, Forbes picked cities by median housing prices, cost of living, climate, taxes and quality of life.

“San Marcos combines affordable living with plenty of sunshine and activity,” Forbes.com reports. The site noted the overall cost of living in San Marcos is 13 percent below the national average.

The city has also been recognized for its culturally vibrant, historic downtown, which hosts film festivals, wine walks, farmers’ markets, live music and events catered to residents of all ages and backgrounds.

San Marcos offers a wide range of housing options for retirees, including Kissing Tree, a new baby boomer-centric housing community covering 1,300 acres. The community is also known for its diversity and access to big city amenities while maintaining its hometown charm.
