San Marcos High School is proud to report that freshman Gabriel Ortiz has been invited by Carnegie Hall and its Weill Music Institute to be a member of the NYO2 (National Youth Orchestra) for the 2017 summer orchestral training program.

The Weill Music Institute gathers outstanding musicians aged 14-17 from the classical orchestral field.

The youths in the NYO2 will be able to work closely with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and perform side-by-side with them in July at concerts in Philadelphia and at Carnegie Hall, led by Giancario Guerrero.

In the notification letter, Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson said, “To be chosen for NYO2 is a remarkable accomplishment and a tribute to your dedication, hard work, and musical achievements, which I’m sure are a consequence of the support you’ve received from family, teachers, and mentors.”

In addition to orchestra, Ortiz is a member of the San Marcos High School band where, as a trumpet player, he made the All-State Band in January 2017.  He made the TMEA Regional Orchestra and Regional Jazz Band, and he is the SMHS Freshman Class President.
