San Marcos Receives One Of The 2018 Garden-Ville Materials Grant

Keep San Marcos Beautiful has been named a recipient of the 2018 Garden-Ville Materials Grant from Keep Texas Beautiful, in partnership with Garden-Ville and Texas Disposal Systems.

The grant provides San Marcos with $1,000 of gardening materials for beautification efforts.

This year’s other recipients were:

• Keep Cuero Beautiful;
• Keep El Campo Beautiful;
• Keep Hutto Beautiful and
• Keep Juan Beautiful

The Habitat Conservation Plan and Urban Forest divisions will partner in using these materials to revamp plant beds in the 100 block of East Hopkins, improving soil health, addressing compaction, and replacing inappropriate plantings. The grant will be also used to amend the soil and receive a tree to add to the pollinator and monarch butterfly friendly plants.

“This grant allows the flexibility in our budget to include plants that provide nectar for the monarch butterfly as they migrate south, adding an exciting dimension to what the City is accomplishing in the Hopkins Street beds,” said Melani Howard, Habitat Conservation Plan Manager. “Materials will also be used to plant, maintain and restore native garden demonstrations, which will serve as a model to educate and engage community members.”

Keep San Marcos Beautiful (KSMB) is a city program dedicated to beautifying and improving the San Marcos community environment through programming and education in litter prevention, beautification, waste reduction and sustainability.

The Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) is a federal plan that protects endangered and threatened species. The San Marcos River habitat and flows are protected through this plan with a portion of the HCP’s funding designated to implement several habitat enhancement measures in our river.
