SMPD to host first free catalytic converter etching and ID event

SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) has reported an increase in catalytic converter thefts in the city, with 301 being stolen since January 2019. SMPD said they are stepping up their efforts to reduce thefts and catch the offenders responsible. 
Chief Stan Standridge issued an administrative directive updating SMPD’s response to catalytic converter thefts.
The Department will partner with community businesses to host catalytic converter etching/ID events. The first event will take place on March 5 at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at San Marcos Toyota located at 5101 South Interstate 35.
Technicians will mark catalytic converters for San Marcos residents for free when provided with a vehicle and proof of address.
A representative from Liberty Mutual will be available to discuss insurance questions and coverage options, should you become a victim of catalytic converter theft.
In September, a new law went into effect across Texas that added requirements to the purchase of catalytic converters by metal recycling entities and increased the criminal penalties for knowingly purchasing stolen catalytic converters.
According to the law, recycling entities may not purchase a catalytic converter unless the seller provides the make, model, and VIN number of the source vehicle and documentation that proves ownership interest in that vehicle. Recycling entities must also keep a written record of all catalytic converter purchases, including the information provided by the seller, for at least two years. SMPD said they are committed to upholding the new law as part of our ongoing efforts to curb catalytic converter thefts, including making visits to metal recycling entities in our area to ensure compliance with records requirements.
