Remembrance Wildflower Garden Blooms At CAF

A remembrance garden planted by the Keep San Marcos Beautiful program, with help from volunteers from Texas State Bobcat Track Team, is blooming at the Central Texas Wing of the Commemorative Airforce Base (CAF), 1841 Airport Rd Bldg 2249.

“One of the veteran volunteers at CAF approached us about planting a wildflower garden to add some color to the landscape,” said Amy Kirwin, Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager. “We jumped at the opportunity, and added red poppies to honor the memories of soldiers who have given their lives fighting for their country.”

Kirwin and her team worked throughout the Fall of 2019 to plant the garden beds.

Volunteers from the Texas State Bobcat Men and Women’s Track Teams joined the efforts, coming out in force to help bring much-needed assistance preparing the soil and planting the seeds.

“We are delighted to help the City in any way we can,” said Ray Williams, Assistant Coach for the Texas State Track Team. Nearly three dozen track team members participated.

The Central Texas Wing hangar was built during World War II as part of the San Marcos Army Airfield. Currently, the Central Texas Wing has maintenance and restoration responsibility for six CAF aircraft: the D-Day veteran C-47 “That’s All, Brother”, a very-rare flying P-39Q Bell Airacobra “Big D”, the B-25 Mitchell “Yellow Rose”, an AT-6 Texan “Red Tail”, the C-45 Expeditor “Lone Star Lady”, and a U-3A Administrator “Blue Canoe”.

Other aircraft in the hangar are privately owned by CAF members and used to support the missions of the CAF. The hangar also hosts a military aviation museum and library.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, visitors are allowed to visit the area outside of CAF, where the garden is located. However, the hangar and museum are closed to visitors.
