Volunteers needed for Great Texas River Clean-Up

Staff Reports

SAN MARCOS – The City of San Marcos and Texas State University are calling on volunteers to register for the Fifth Annual Fall River Clean-Up scheduled for Saturday, October 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Just like this past spring, due to continued COVID-19 conditions, we have changed the usual cleanup event.

“We’re encouraging everyone to keep their teams to a maximum of 10 people, wear a mask, and practice social distancing,” said Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager Amy Thomaides.

The cleanup, which spans from Sewell Park to Stokes Park, is divided into group action areas by watershed:

  • Purgatory Creek 1
  • Purgatory Creek 2
  • Cottonwood Creek
  • Sessom Creek
  • Sink Creek
  • Willow Creek
  • San Marcos River 1
  • San Marcos River 2
  • Blanco River

Keep San Marcos Beautiful will set up a staffed disposal area at the City Park Rec Hall, 170 Charles Austin Drive between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. the day of the event to track the amount of trash collected. Volunteers interested in participating in the weigh-in may deliver trash collected during the event to the site and receive a gift for their service.

Anyone interested in participating in the upper San Marcos River portion of the clean-up should select an available location from the watershed map. Contact Keep San Marcos Beautiful at 512.393.8419 or athomaides@sanmarcostx.govfor additional questions.
