Wallace Middle School Evacuated For Small Fire, Afternoon Schedule Effected

No injuries were reported.

Wallace Middle School was evacuated Monday afternoon after a small fire triggered the school’s fire alarm.

According to Tim Savoy, Hays Consolidated Independent School District’s Public information officer, an air conditioner compressor above a closet housing the technology interface for the incoming internet and telephone lines to the school shorted out. The short caused a small fire and quite a bit of smoke and triggered the school’s fire alarm around 3:30 p.m.

The building was immediately and safely evacuated. Kyle Fire department responded quickly and contained the fire to the air conditioner compressor. Students were dismissed at regular time (3:40 p.m.). Some activities at the campus were cancelled tonight. However, the scheduled volleyball game and band rehearsal practice will take place.

The campus principal sent our the following message over social media. Additionally, the campus sent an email to all parents to let them know what happened. Wallace Middle School has about 800 students enrolled.

Kyle Fire & Hays CISD Maintenance crews have identified the source of the concern that triggered a Fire alarm and building evacuation today, 11/06/17 at or around 3:30 PM. Students, staff and parents were all evacuated safely from the building and accounted for shortly thereafter. The issue has been contained and maintenance will work to remedy the issue before classes resume tomorrow, 11/07/17.

WMS will host limited after-school student activities tonight including the schedule volleyball game and band rehearsal practice. We canceled after-school tutoring and other clubs and sent students home via regular dismissal bus and/or parent pick-up.

Thank you for your support in ensuring our students take drills seriously! Today was a perfect example of students listening and following directions and everybody remained safe as a result.

Email wms.support@hayscisd.net, if you have any questions, concerns or comments.

We will return to normal schedule tomorrow, 11/07/17.

Thank you,
Sarah Hodges, Principal
