Hays Co Food Bank, SMCISD, Cap Area Food Bank Bringing MORE Food To Hays County
As of the 2013 Feeding America study ‘Map the Meal Gap’, Hays County has 25,380 individuals who are food insecure. The USDA defines food insecurity as a state in which “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.” Families and individuals throughout our community are faced with the decision to purchase food or pay rent or pay utilities or some other type of bill on a daily or weekly basis. The Food Bank is committed to easing this burden when it comes to full bellies.
The Hays County Food Bank holds six public food distributions Monday-Thursday throughout the county and also provides food to over 20 partner agencies weekly. However, with 70% of the San Marcos CISD students qualifying for free or reduced lunches, it is apparent that there is still a great need.
Starting March 1st of this year, food insecure individuals are invited to come to the new mobile pantry site from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. every first Tuesday of the month. Capital Area Food Bank will park a truck filled with healthy perishable and nonperishable food items ready to distribute from the San Marcos High School Rattler Stadium, located at 4660 TX-123 in San Marcos. The Hays County Food Bank staff and volunteers will run this distribution every month, and food insecure individuals who wish to participate need only to bring their ID for proof of age and bags or boxes to carry their groceries. Clients must be 18 years or older and be present at the distribution in order to receive their food. Each household will receive one box of food.

The Hays County Food Bank, along with more than 40 partner agencies, distributed 528,964 pounds of food to more than 18,000 food insecure residents, including senior citizens and many others facing economic challenges, in 2014. “Food security” refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it.
