San Marcos Head Start receives more than $600k from American Rescue Plan

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), who represents much of Hays County, announced more than $600,000 of funding for San Marcos Head Start programs today—going straight to Community Action Inc. of Central Texas to fund their work providing comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and families.

Head Start has a long history, stretching back to its founding by former President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

This funding was secured through the American Rescue Plan, which Rep. Doggett was pleased to vote for and ultimately pass, despite every Texas Republican member voting against this landmark recovery package.

“There is no stronger investment than an investment in our children’s future,” said Congressman Doggett. “This relief funding will equip an effective San Marcos program to expand their work in supporting children’s educational development, preparing them for success, and helping parents work without shouldering crushing childcare costs—costs which I know are prohibitive for so many families in our area right now. We are all better off when the next generation is happy and healthy, and Libby and I are excited to see our local Head Start program make good use of these Rescue funds.”

Carole Belver, Executive Director of Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas stated, “We are thrilled for the opportunity to be able to serve more children with these American Rescue Plan dollars.”

The $637,735 in funds will go towards hiring additional team members, ensuring that the Head Start program can not only attract but also keep, the best and brightest educators and staff who will continue to work with our families in Hays County.

Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas has been providing care for 55 years in our community, and today works with over 500 children and their families in Hays and Caldwell counties, across eight locations.
