Effective Sept. 1, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Driver Handbook was revised and transitioned to a printable, online-only format. Handbook revisions include information on texting while driving and several other clarifications passed by the Texas Legislature during the 85th Legislative Session.

Additionally, the handbook includes practical suggestions on what the public should expect and actions to follow when pulled over by law enforcement.  The information in this section of the book, beginning on page 68, was compiled through input from a working group of interested stakeholders, including advocacy attorneys, civil liberty organizations, law enforcement and legislative members.

These practical suggestions in the handbook will also serve as a base foundation for the educational curriculum that will be developed as a result of Senate Bill 30.

All of these revisions and additions to the handbook were made in order to further assist new Texas drivers in learning the rules of the road and enhancing public safety for all Texans by making our roadways safer.
