When Earlene Eskridge sent a short email to TxDOT last November suggesting an additional lane along the I-35 northbound frontage road from Airport Boulevard to Barbara Jordan Boulevard, she never could have imagined her suggestion would inspire improvements that would help many drivers in the area.
Eskridge’s email to TxDOT focused on the limited space along the northbound frontage road of I-35 near 51st Street, noting that reduced lanes from Airport Boulevard to Barbara Jordan Boulevard were too confining. Eskridge pointed out that the roadway went from three lanes of traffic to one, and she asked about the possibility of restriping the frontage road to allow for two lanes traffic flow in the area.
TxDOT read Eskridge’s email and contacted her to discuss her suggestions. After reviewing the current design of the frontage road, TxDOT determined that Eskridge’s suggestions would be helpful for safety and traffic efficiency. TxDOT has since restriped the roadway, and drivers can now enjoy two through lanes in the popular corridor.
Eskridge was contacted and thanked for her suggestion for improvements. She was elated to have contributed to a redesign that will help other drivers. Eskridge’s story is a reminder that TxDOT values community suggestions and input for roadway improvements.
