SMCISD Elementary Schools Participate In ‘Battle Of The Books’
The project was coordinated by the elementary school-level Information Literacy Specialists and funded by a San Marcos Education Foundation grant.
May 4th was not only Star Wars Day but also the galactic Battle of the Books Day in San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District.
Teams from each of the six elementary schools competed for the coveted trophy that will be displayed on their campus for a full year, until the next competition.
Elementary students throughout the district read the same selection of books and then competed at the campus level for who would be their representing champions.
Twenty-four students made the cut to represent their school in the Battle of the Books held at Dick’s Classic Car Garage before an audience of principals, administrators, trustees, parents, and grandparents.
Each team wore matching tee shirts and sat at tables decorated in the same color: Bowie was purple; Travis was red, and Hernandez was green; De Zavala was turquoise and yellow, and Crockett was teal and green.
San Marcos Librarian Diane Insley gave out the questions, which were timed for responses.
When the last question was asked and answered, the Hernandez Elementary team of Cora LaCoss, Martaya Vaughn, Samantha Irvin, and Katalina Postert was crowned champions of the literary battle.

The enhanced reading program and competition, grant was awarded to Priscilla Delgado (Bowie), Maurica Barr (Crockett), Jennifer Payne (De Zavala), Kim Morgan-Benson (Hernandez), Adriane Clift (Mendez), and Emily Valdez (Travis).
