Wimberley May 1 General Election cancelled

Staff Reports

WIMBERLEY, TX – The City’s May 1, 2021 General City Council Election has been canceled due to lack of opposition for the three candidates who filed.

The candidates are: Place One, Rebecca Minnick; Place Three, Christine Byrne; (both incumbents serving their first terms in those positions) and David Cohen, who filed for Place Five.

The Certification of Unopposed Candidates for Wimberley City Council was submitted by City Secretary, Laura Calcote, to the Mayor, City Council and the election candidates on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. City Council approved Ordinance No. 2021-06, canceling the election at their March 4th meeting.

A copy of the Ordinance must be posted on Election Day, Saturday, May 1, 2021, at the Wimberley Community Center, where the election is normally held. Since there will be no election results to certify, the swearing-in of candidates will take place on Friday, May 7th.

Canceling the election saves the City roughly $6,000.00, which was budgeted for that purpose in Fiscal Year 2021. This is the second consecutive city election where all candidates were unopposed, and the second the city’s history.
