Council Approves Speed Reduction For Several Streets In San Marcos Dunbar, Heritage Neighborhoods

The San Marcos City Council amended the traffic register by reducing the speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour along streets in the Dunbar and Heritage Neighborhoods.

Several people spoke in favor of the speed reduction citing the increase of traffic accidents and other safety concerns.

In April 2020, Hopkins Street was closed between Moore Street and Bishop Street for the construction of a capital improvement project for roadway and drainage improvements. The reconstruction project is expected to be completed in 2022.

Hopkins traffic during construction is being detoured along Moore, Craddock, and Bishop streets.

However, a significant number of drivers are not following the official detour route and are finding alternate routes through residential streets in the Heritage and Dunbar Neighborhoods.

Subsequently, traffic volumes and speeds have increased on several residential streets in the Heritage and Dunbar Neighborhoods.

The Public Services Department conducted traffic engineering studies at eight, representative locations within the study area between September and October of 2020.

The Transportation Division evaluated the speed limits of roadways within the impacted residential area by using USLIMIT2.

USLIMITS2 is a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) tool to help practitioners set reasonable, safe, and consistent speed limits for specific segments of roads.

The speed limit changed passed unanimously.

According to City Staff, temporary signage will be installed for sixty days to warn drivers of the speed limit change.

The streets where the speed limits have been reduced are the following: 

• 100 Block of Armstead St. from San Antonio St. to MLK Dr.
• 700 – 1500 block of Belvin St. from Scott St to Dixson St.
• 100 – 800 block of Blanco St. from Oscar Smith St. to San Antonio St.
• 400 – 600 block of Browne Ter from Burleson St. to Viola St.
• 500 – 1200 Burleson St. from Moore St. to Prospect St.
• 600 block of Burt St. from Maury St. to west end.
• 500 – 700 block of Centre St. from Shady to Endicott St.
• 1000 block of Dailey St. from Michell Ave. to Johnson Ave.
• 200 Block of Dixon St. from Hopkins St. to Belvin St.
• 300 – 400 block and 1000 – 1100 block of Faris St. from west end to Michell Ave.
• 600 – 1200 block of Gravel St. from Jackman St. to west end.
• 500 block of Hansen St. from Blanco St. to Maury St.
• 500 Block of Harvey St. from Moore St. to Blanco St.
• 200 – 300 block of Herndon St. from MLK Dr. to Valley St.
• 900 block of Highland Ter. from Browne Ter to west end
• 100 – 400 block of Jackman St. from San Antonio St. to Gravel
• 200 block of Johns St. from MLK Dr. to Centre St.
• 800 – 900 block of Kasch St. from Burleson St to west end.
