San Marcos To Give Away 300 Trees At Arbor Day Celebration

The City of San Marcos is hosting a free, family-friendly Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 AM to 12 PM at the Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive.

Throughout the morning, attendees are invited to explore booths, enjoy interactive activities and listen to a tree talk. Children’s activities include storytelling and interactive areas. Forestry badges will be available.

Thanks to a grant from Apache Corporation, the City will also be giving away 300 trees to residents who attend the event and present a San Marcos Public Library Card or State ID Card with an address within San Marcos.

The tree giveaway will include 300 trees, with 17 different varieties of trees including Bald Cypress, Bur Oak and Texas Mountain Laurel. Trees will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Our residents have demonstrated a long-standing interest in maintaining a healthy, resilient community forest in our urban area,” said Urban Forester Kelly Eby. “Our staff will be on-site to help residents learn which tree will meet their landscaping goals and be appropriate for their neighborhoods’ soil conditions.”

Attendees are also encouraged to visit the San Marcos Electric Utility table for the kickoff of a new tree rebate program. More details will be announced during the Arbor Day celebration.
