TxDOT Urges Drivers To Exercise Continued Caution, Delay Unnecessary Travel During New Round Of Winter Weather

AUSTIN — TxDOT is asking motorists to stay off roadways, if possible, as additional hazardous weather is forecasted overnight and Wednesday, which will impact driving conditions.

TxDOT crews have resumed pretreating roadways, where possible, in advance of the next round of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

By lowering the freezing point of precipitation on the roadway, pretreating helps reduce the ability of ice and snow to stick to the pavement.

It’s important to note, pretreatment loses some effectiveness in extreme cold, and will not prevent ice and snow accumulations.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution as patches of ice may be present or reappear on roadways, given the state’s prolonged and record-breaking low temperatures.

In addition, TxDOT has experienced weather-related outages to some traffic cameras, digital highway signs, and traffic signals.

TxDOT asks motorists to exercise extreme caution at intersections if lights are not working and treat them as four-way stops, per state law.

TxDOT crews continue working around the clock to clear, treat and monitor roadways, with many areas across the state now in their second week of 24/7 winter weather operations.

TxDOT thanks motorists for their patience, and for doing their part during this weather emergency by staying home and/or driving only when necessary and driving to the conditions on the roadway.

Residents are asked to please monitor road conditions on TxDOT social media accounts. Current road conditions may also be found at DriveTexas.org or by calling 800-452-9292.
