Officer Putnam was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 18, 2020, while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

According to Interim Police Chief Bob Klett, the suspect ambushed officers Justin Putnam, Franco Stewart, and Justin Mueller when they entered the apartment in response to the domestic violence call.

Officer Putnam was fatally wounded during entry; officers Stewart and Mueller have since both recovered from life-threatening injuries. At his family’s request, the funeral was postponed due to COVID-19.

The service included special remembrances, video tributes, and the presentation of a posthumous award by Chief Stan Standridge. Full law enforcement honors were given to the fallen officer on the lawn outside the church immediately after the service.

Charitable contributions may be made in Officer Putnam’s name to Shoreline Church and/or the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center Transitional Housing Project.
