Austin Animal Shelters Reach Capacity, Offers Name Your Price Adoptions

The Austin Animal Center (AAC) is teaming up with Austin Pets Alive (APA!) and Austin Humane Society (AHS) with a goal of finding homes for 400 animals this weekend, amid unusually high intake numbers at the municipal shelter.

The Name Your Price adoption promotion, starting Friday, October 11 through Sunday, October 13 will apply to all dogs and cats at AAC, all dogs and cats over 6 months old at AHS, and all cats and those dogs in the Canine Good Citizen and TOP Dog programs at APA!.

AAC has experienced a 16 percent increase in animal intake over the last year, compared to 2018. Shelter capacity in October of last year was approximately 570 animals compared to today’s population of 789 animals.  The Center has operated over capacity for most of the year, frequently utilizing pop up kennels in meeting rooms for dogs. Unprecedented cat intake has forced shelter staff to move feline residents into offices and meeting rooms as well.

The community’s help is desperately needed to find homes for at least 400 of the animals in Austin’s shelter system in order to create room for incoming animals in need.
