This Week With Gary Job Corps Center Students
Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.
The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit their Official Public Web Site.
WBL Students are “Blessings”
Students Eloy Palacios (CMA), Amaya Holt (MAIC) and Syris Thomas (Pharm. Tech.) have been working at the J.J. Pickle Wellness Center. They have been assisting with lockbox key set-up for the dormitories, helped put together new medical folders, refilling first aid kits, and even help coordinate a potluck with staff to welcome back Dr. Zamora. Eloy, Amaya and Syris have been participating in Work-based Learning (WBL) an internship program for Gary Job Corps students.

Caldwell County Proclaims “Randolph Goodman Day”
Caldwell County Commissioner’s Court approves a proclamation making June 24, 2019 “Randolph Goodman Day.”
The proclamation stated that Randolph Goodman, a representative and advocate for over 26 years for the Gary Job Corps Center, a tuition-free training and education program located in Caldwell County, Texas whose mission is helping young men and women gain the skills and educational opportunities needed to establish meaningful careers and build lives they can be proud of; and esteemed community member involved in numerous organizations like the Lions Club, Rotary, multiple Chambers of Commerce, and Salvation Army; and leader and contributor to all of Central Texas was receiving the honor of June 24, 2019, as being “Randolph Goodman Day.”
GSMP Donates to GJCC
The Greater San Marcos Partnership(GSMP) donated two whiteboards to the Gary Job Corps Center (GJCC) to assist students in the classroom. The GJCC and GSMP have had a partnership for many years and it just goes to show you the thoughtfulness of the San Marcos community. Neighbors helping neighbors.
GJCC Student Receives The Prudential Spirit Community Award
Raymond Briener graduated from Kanab High School located in Utah in March 2019 and immediately enrolled into the Gary Job Corps Center to learn to become a correctional officer.
Raymond recently was called back to Utah to receive The Prudential Spirit of Community Award medallion and a letter signed by President Donald Trump for the “President’s Volunteer Service Award” for his outstanding volunteer work with multiple agencies.
Some of is volunteer work was with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) which he was a commander, the Volunteer Center, and the fire department. Raymond stated that he can’t even remember how many hours he has volunteered over the years and he recalls that in just one month alone he volunteered over 350 hours. Gary Job Corps is so proud of Raymond and can’t wait to see what he will do in his career!
Retiring After 46 Years at Gary Job Corps
Linda Kindred, Career Preparation Period (CPP) Supervisor is retiring from Gary Job Corps after 46 years of service.
During her career, Ms. Kindred worked at the cafeteria, academics, residential, center standards, transportation, student store, and CPP. Ms. Kindred received the Appreciation Service Award for 46 years of dedicated service to the Gary Job Corps Center. She exemplified the values of honesty, integrity, and teamwork while maintaining a steadfast commitment to the organization.
“I love you, you are my team. You are my family and I’m proud of you,” said Linda Kindred as she was saying goodbye to staff and students. When asked how she would be spending her time when retired, she said she “would be babysitting her grandbabies.”
