Registration Open for New Life Long Learning Classes

San Marcos Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Texas State University’s Retired Faculty and Staff Association (RFSA) continues to offer new Life Long Learning courses for the greater San Marcos area.

 

People can register for these classes by calling 512.393.8400 or in person at the Parks and Recreation Main Office at 401 E. Hopkins or the San Marcos Activity Center at 501 E. Hopkins.

 

You can also register online at www.sanmarcostx.gov/activeSMTX. Please search LLL for Life Long Learning classes.

 

The classes are primarily for those age 50 and above, but adults of any age are welcome to register. The classes will begin in April. Course offerings are listed below:

 

Depicting the Wonderful Times of Your Life **Registration Required

 

This course is designed to allow you to express enjoyable times in your life through your own artwork. You will work from personal photographs and other memorabilia. Mixed-media and various art techniques will be explored and used as appropriate to each participant’s vision and plan. You will work on your own project, yet share your wonderful stories with each other.

 

Please Note: The supplies you choose to use are NOT included and therefore at your own expense.

 

Location: Dunbar Recreation Center Arts and Crafts Room

When: Wednesdays, April 6, 13, 20, 27, and May 4 & 11

Time: 10 – 11:30 a.m.

Cost: $40

 

Presented by Veronique Hahn. Veronique Hahn was born in Casablanca, Morocco. She grew up in Morocco, Switzerland, the USA and the Netherlands where she studied art. She is an artist, art instructor, children’s book author and illustrator. She loves to spend time with her family and friends. She enjoys living in San Marcos.

 

Introduction to Standard American and Duplicate Bridge **Registration Required

 

This class is designed to meet the interests of two groups of students: (a) those NEW to bridge, as well as (b) those who have taken a PREVIOUS class with Cathy and Barbara. Attendees will be separated based on their existing bridge knowledge and then led by one of the instructors.

Beginners will be introduced to the basic elements of bridge with the added benefit of understanding the challenge and pleasure of competitive duplicate bridge. Those continuing students will complete their study via the ACBL Bridge Series.

When: Fridays, April 8, 15, 22, 29 and May 6

Time: 9 – 11 a.m.

Cost: $40

 

Presented by Cathy Supple and Barbara Morgan. Cathy is retired and resides in San Marcos. Barbara is a realtor from New Braunfels. Both instructors are “life masters” with over 1,300 master points combined which are awarded by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). Both instructors are certified bridge teachers by the ACBL.

 

Give Falls the Boot **Registration Required – Limited Number of Participants

 

Many senior citizens assume that sub-par balance is just another side-effect of aging. However, it need not be. You will be involved in light exercises to build strength and balance, as well as the mental habits required to gain confidence in being more active. As Camille is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist, she can assist your independence and being safe in your home.

 

Location: San Marcos Activity Center

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28; May 3, 5, and 10

Time: 10 a.m. to Noon

Cost: FREE

Mixed-Media Techniques in Drawing **Registration Required

 

Class members will learn to use various mixed-media processes to create unique, inventive, frameable designs.

Time: 1-3 p.m.

Cost: $40.00

 

Presented by Roxana Tuff. Roxana is a metalsmith and illustrator who holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing and a MFA in Painting. She has taught in the art studio area at Texas State for 14 years.
