Native Cultures Day

Wednesday, June 22

10 a.m. Craft

2 p.m. Storytelling

Explore the heritage of Native Americans with crafts and storytelling during Native Cultures Day at the San Marcos Public Library on Wednesday, June 22 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. At 10 a.m. children of all ages are invited for Native American-inspired crafts.

At 2 p.m. Coahuiltecan storyteller Emma Ortega will captivate young audiences with enchanting stories about the lives and legacies of Native American people.  Ortega, also known for her corn husk sculptures, has been performing as a storyteller for over thirty years at powwows and events across the state. Her goal is to dispel commonly held stereotypes about Native Americans and to inspire self-esteem and creativity in her audiences through art.

This event is made possible by the Indigenous Cultures Institute of San Marcos, which was founded in 2006 by members of the Miakan/Garza Band to preserve the arts, traditions, ceremonies, and languages of their population, collectively known as Coahuiltecans.
