Mendez Elementary Celebrates College Week At TXST

During the last week of September, students at Mendez Elementary celebrated College Week by participating in various college-themed activities during their Specials classes all week. A Texas State Pep Rally held in the gym was the culminating event.  During the pep rally, students learned about ways to pay for college, reasons why they should go to college, and what they can do to be prepared for college.

Teachers Deryk Lindsey and Adam Voglewede, along with other Mendez staff, incorporated movement, excitement, and kinesthetic learning into the pep rally with Go Noodle games using college related vocabulary and questions and an obstacle course.

Earlier in the week, students in grades 2-5 took a field trip to tour the Texas State University campus.  Texas State student volunteers from the Center for P-16 Initiatives helped the classes navigate the campus and answered questions about life as a Bobcat.  Mendez teachers and support staff members led the students on a self-guided tour of the campus and pointed out various buildings and points of interest along the way.

According to Principal Karen McGowan, “Being able to tour the campus and meet Texas State students, some of whom are SMHS graduates, is a great, real-world experience to show our kids that college can be part of their futures, too.”
