Short and long term lane, road closures and detours that may impact drivers along US 183 and adjacent roadways in east Austin.

Below is an overview of the 183 South project’s lane, road, and ramp closures.

US 183 South Closures & Detours •

Short Term

Sound Wall Construction: Monday through Friday (9/17-21) from 8:30 am to 3 pm, the US 183 southbound frontage road will be closed by one lane between US 290 and Manor/Springdale Road.

Guardrail Work: Monday through Friday (9/17-21) from 9 am to 3 pm, there will be various single lane closures along the US 183 northbound mainlanes between Manor/Springdale Road and MLK Jr., Boulevard.

Bridge Construction: Thursday (9/20) from 8 pm to 6 am and Friday (9/21) from 8 pm to 10 am, the US 183 southbound mainlanes will be closed at SH 71. All traffic will detour by exiting for westbound SH 71, taking the u-turn at E. Riverside Drive, and heading eastbound on SH 71. Expect Delays.

Roadway Striping: Sunday (9/23) from 8 pm to 6 am, the US 183 southbound mainlanes will be reduced by one lane between Thurgood Avenue and Bolm Road.

Roadway Striping: Monday (9/24) from 8 pm to 6 am, the US 183 northbound mainlanes will be reduced by one lane between Hergotz Lane and Bolm Road.

Long Term

• Beginning as early as Friday, September 14, 2018, at 8 pm, the US 183 underpass at Bolm Road will close permanently to eastbound and westbound cross street traffic. For eastbound movement, all traffic will detour to the southbound to northbound U-turn at Levander Loop. For westbound movement, all traffic will detour via a new temporary northbound to southbound U-turn located north of Bolm Road.

The cloverleaf ramp from SH 71 westbound to US 183 southbound will be CLOSED for 10-12 months starting as early as August 13, 2018.

Road Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously from Monday (4/16/2018) at 9 am to Monday (4/1/2019) at 5 pm, Smith Road, west of US 183, and Thurgood Avenue will be closed at the US 183 southbound mainlanes. Follow signed detours.

Road Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously between Thursday, (6/14/2018) at 8 pm until Monday, (4/1/2019) at 5 pm, Vargas Road will be closed at US 183. Follow signed detour.

Road Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously between Thursday, (6/1/2018) at 6 am until Monday, (4/1/2019) at 6 am, Eastgate will be closed at the US 183 southbound mainlanes. Follow signed detour.

Road Closure for Utility Work: Continuously through late December 2018, at 6 am, Tracor Lane and Marcel Gres will be closed at US 183.

Lane Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously through December 2018, 51st Street on the west side of US 183 will be reduced to one lane in both directions between US 183 and Hutchinson Drive.

Road Closure for Utility Work: Central Avenue and Bluestein Drive are temporarily closed at their intersections with northbound US 183 for utility work and will remain closed through 2018. Traffic is being detoured via Technicenter Drive and Semi-Conductor Drive.

Road Closure for Bridge Construction: Continuously through December 2018, Levander Loop will be closed at the US 183 northbound turnaround. Follow the signed detour.

Ramp Closure for Bridge Construction: Beginning as early as Sunday, August 26, at 6 pm and lasting approximately 10-12 months, the SH 71 westbound exit ramp to US 183 southbound will be closed. Detour by exiting for the U-turn at E. Riverside Drive and heading eastbound on SH 71 to the US 183 southbound exit.

Lane Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously between Monday, September 10, at 9 am until Saturday, November 10, at 6 pm, Bluestein Drive west of US 183 will be closed at US 183. All traffic will detour via Technicenter Drive with Hudson Street as an alternate route.

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) is an independent government agency created in 2002 to improve the transportation system in Williamson and Travis counties.

According to their website, their mission is “to implement innovative, multi-modal transportation solutions that reduce congestion and create transportation choices that enhance quality of life and economic vitality.”
The Mobility Authority was created and operates under the Texas Transportation Code Chapter 370 and is authorized under state law to implement a wide range of transportation systems including roadways, airports, seaports and transit services.
The Mobility Authority is authorized to issue revenue bonds to fund projects and can utilize user fees and/or taxes to fund operations and repay bonds.
