Men’s Basketball Travels To Georgia Southern For Thursday Night Contest

BasketbalGeorgia Southern has controlled the all-time series 5-1 over Texas State.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A big weekend awaits the Texas State men’s basketball team, which is in second place in the Sun Belt Conference standings by a half a game, in the state of Georgia. First up on the schedule is Georgia Southern on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT in the Hanner Fieldhouse.

The Bobcats are 13-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference play while the Eagles are 14-6 on the season and tied with in-state rival Georgia State for third place in the league’s standings at 5-2.

Stream on ESPN3, Daniel Waugh and Holden Galatas will provide commentary of the contest. Brant Freeman will have the call on the radio with the game being broadcast on AM1300 The Zone out of Austin and KTSW 89.9 FM out of San Marcos. Fans can also listen to the game through the iHeartRadio and TuneIn Radio apps on their mobile device. Live stats will be available for the game with a link on the team’s schedule page.

Nijal Pearson is the lone TXST player averaging double-digits points on the season at 13.9 per game. He also leads the team with 35 made three-pointers and 27 steals. The sophomore enters grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game and dishing out 2.1 assists per game., both second on the squad.

Entering the contest with 9.6 ppg is Immanuel King. The Rocky Mount, North Carolina native sports team-highs in field goal percentage (57.7), rebounds (6.1) and block (17). Eric Terry is the only other Bobcat with double-digit blocks at 15.

Alex Peacock is adding 7.5 ppg and 5.2 rpg. He has recorded 26 steals that included three on Saturday against Louisiana. The top outside threat for TXST is Tyler Blount with a 40.2 three-point shooting percentage while connecting on 33 attempts.

Starting the past four games at point guard, Tre’Larenz Nottingham has put up 13.0 ppg, 3.3 apg and 2.3 spg in those contests.

Scouting Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern is coming off an 83-66 loss on Saturday to the Panthers on the road. The Eagles only other conference loss has been at South Alabama. They have wins in SBC action over Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Little Rock and Troy. When playing at home, GS is 6-0 with four non-conference victories.

Pacing the Eagles and fifth in the Sun Belt with 18.6 ppg is Tookie Brown, who also sports team-highs in three-point percentage (50.8), free throw percentage (78.7), assists (4.2) and steals (41). He is shooting 55.1 percent from the field, has made 31 three-pointers and grabbing 4.2 rpg.

Having been limited to 15 games this season, Ike Smith is averaging 11.4 ppg on 36.3 percent shooting, 26.3 percent from beyond the arc and is 19-for-38 (50.0%) at the free throw line. The junior guard is third on the squad with 4.5 rpg.

The third Eagle putting up 10 points a contest is Mike Hughes at 10.7. The senior guard has recorded 5.2 rpg and 32 assists, both second on the team. He has made 34.0 percent from the field, 33.9 percent of his three-point attempts with 40 made treys and is converting 69.5 percent at the charity stripe.

Jake Allsmiller has made a 56 three-pointers, the third most in the SBC, at a 37.8 percent clip to put up 9.7 ppg. Only 13 of his total shot attempts this season have come from inside the arc.

Montae Glenn is the team’s primary big man and is grabbing 8.8 rpg that ranks second in the conference. Of his 167 total boards, 83 have come on the offensive glass to lead the Sun Belt and rank fourth in the nation at 4.4 per game. The junior is netting 9.7 ppg on 55.8 percent shooting and paces the squad with 25 blocks.

As a team, GS is seventh in the country in offensive rebounds per game (14.1), ninth in three-point field goal defense (29.9) and 17th in rpg (40.5). 

All-Time vs. Eagles

Georgia Southern has controlled the all-time series 5-1 over Texas State. Five of the games in the series has been decided by six points or less with the lone exception being the Bobcats’ 80-66 win on Dec. 30, 2015 in Strahan Coliseum. All-time, TXST is winless in four games in the Hanner Fieldhouse.
