Rattler Alumna Volunteers To Help Feed Children
Shelby Hebert, San Marcos High School Salutatorian-Class of 2011, says the plight of children who do not have adequate, nutritious food on the weekends hits close to home. Through her volunteer efforts with the community-based volunteer organization School Fuel San Marcos and through other volunteer efforts with her church and babysitting, Hebert has come to know some of the children who eat nutritious meals during the weekdays at their San Marcos CISD schools but often go hungry when school is not in session.
“I can see the difference,” Hebert says. Now a Texas State University graduate working on her Master’s degree in Accounting, she has volunteered with School Fuel for a year now. But she’s worked in other capacities through the First Baptist Church and other community organizations.
The School Fuel program recently logged 2,000 volunteer hours preparing and delivering sacked food to select students in three SMCISD elementary schools. That’s currently about 414 sacks of food each week. Volunteers from a variety of organizations are crucial to the program’s mission. The group hopes to grow to feed children at the other three elementary schools and the new pre-kindergarten center.

As for Hebert, San Marcos is her home. It’s her intension to continue a life of service– especially on behalf of the littlest citizens in our community.
