Asberry, Johnson Earn All-District Honors for Second Consecutive Year

Staff Reports

SAN MARCOS – For the second year in a row, Texas State head coach Terrence Johnson and senior Caleb Asberry earned all-district honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as Johnson was named the District 23 Coach of the Year and Asberry was selected to the All-District 23 Second Team, the organization announced.

Asberry is the first Bobcat to earn multiple all-district honors in a career from the NABC as he was named second team last season.

Johnson, meanwhile, is the first back-to-back district coach of the year in program history.

An All-Sun Belt First Team selection, Asberry leads the Sun Belt regular season champs in scoring with 13.8 points per game on 43.8 percent shooting. He is also averaging career-highs in rebounds (4.5), assists (2.1) and steals (1.3) while starting every game this year.

Out of Pflugerville, Texas, Asberry enters the NIT ranked 11th among Sun Belt players in scoring and 23rd in rebounding. He is also fourth in free throw percentage (82.1 percent).

In his second year as a head coach, Johnson continues to add to his honors cabinet. In addition to being the District 23 Coach of the Year two years in a row, he has also been named Sun Belt Coach of the Year in both seasons. He has led Texas State to 39 wins, back-to-back regular season conference championships and the program’s first NIT appearance.

Johnson’s 39 wins are also the most by a Texas State head coach in his first two seasons since Dan Wall won 49 in 1978 and 1979.

The NABC first started awarding all-district honors in 2013.

The Bobcats open the NIT tonight at North Texas. The first-round matchup is set for 7 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN+ and heard on the Varsity Network.
