Austin Animal Center Has A Space Crisis For Large Dogs

The Austin Animal Center is in dire need of space relief for medium to large dogs. AAC is operating near capacity to house medium and large dogs and needs the help from the community either by becoming a foster or by seeking a forever friend and adopting a pet.
“The AAC is the shelter for the community, and the Austin community loves their pets,” said Interim Chief Animal Services Officer Lee Ann Shenefiel. “As has occurred in the past, we have reached critical levels for space for the animals. We need help again from our community to address these issues. Residents interested can visit us in person or on our website to foster, adopt, or even foster to adopt an animal.”
Residents who foster by Nov. 19, and then later decide to adopt, will have their adoption fees waived. Fees will be waived as well on any adoptions of medium to large dogs. These fee waivers will last through Sunday, Nov. 19. Information, updates, and specials will be posted on the Austin Animal Center Facebook page.
Members of the public also can help lost pets in their own neighborhoods and keep them from filling kennels at the Center. If a dog or cat is found, and the finder can safely keep the pet, they can call 3-1-1 to create a Found Pet Report. Finders can foster the pet while shelter staff work to reunite the pet with their owner. In addition to keeping pets out of the shelter during this busy period, it can be easier to reunite pets and owners if pets stay in the community where they were found.
The Austin Animal Center offers free I.D. tags and microchips to all pet owners in Austin and Travis County to help keep pets safe and out of the animal shelter system.
If a pet goes missing, owners should visit www.AustinAnimalCenter.org and click the Lost & Found button. Owners will find a step-by-step listing of what to do to find a lost pet.
Tips to locate a lost pet include posting to the Facebook group Austin Lost and Found Pets, and posting on Nextdoor.com and Craigslist.
