San Marcos CISD Cancels All Extracurricular Events, Excluding UIL Athletic Events

Yesterday afternoon, San Marcos CISD Superintendent, Michael Cardona released a statement notifying students, staff, and parents that the decision had been made to cancel all extracurricular events, excluding UIL athletic events.

According to the press release, this is a precautionary measure for San Marcos CISD (SMCISD) and that UIL athletic events will only be open to the participants, their families, and essential staff. Tutorials will continue as scheduled for today.

“As we all prepare for spring break, I want to assure you that San Marcos CISD will continue to stay on top of any developments related to coronavirus (COVID-19) in our area. We are working in partnership with local health officials and will inform you of any information that pertains to San Marcos CISD,” said Michael Cardona, SMCISD Superintendent of Schools

As of yesterday, Thursday, March 12, there are no reported cases of coronavirus in the SMCISD district.

According to district officials, they are prepared and have “response plans” in place if there are confirmed cases of coronavirus. These plans will guide them through the process of keeping their students and staff as safe as possible.

“The District is prepared for numerous scenarios, and we realize each case will have unique circumstances. For example, we must be ready if there is a confirmed case not only at one of our schools but at any District facility. Then, we need to determine who is involved in the case. It could be an employee, student, delivery driver, or visitor. There are many factors to consider before deciding what actions to take,” said Cardona.

  • A school or other District building could be closed
  • We may ask students or staff who had close contact with someone with a confirmed case to go home immediately and self-quarantine for 14 days, per Hays County Health
  • Custodial teams are prepared with electrostatic decontamination applicators and will work around the clock as
  • Plans for alternative instruction will be issued in the event of a closure. Communication will be sent to impacted families and staff via email, text, and phone
