A Lifetime Of Achievements- Bill Taylor Remembered

San Marcos has lost an invaluable community member Mr. William G. (Bill) Taylor.
William Gregory Taylor, was born May 19, 1948 in Poteet, Texas. Bill started his scroll of achievements at a young age graduating from San Marcos Baptist Academy in 1966 a member of the National Honor Society, and Highest Male Graduate in the College Preparatory program.
He immediately went on to Southwest Texas University in 1966. As a student he was an active member of the Varsity Bowling Team, Alpha Phi Omega, and Chased Coeds. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Business upon graduation in 1971.
Bill served our country as a soldier in the United States Army, 49th Armored Division from 1969-1975 during the Vietnam era.
By 1974, Bill opened an insurance agency and began a thriving career and beautiful family here in San Marcos.
His extraordinary public service career began in 1982 with an appointment to the San Marcos Airport Commission, along with serving on the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Small Business Advisory Board, the Main Street Advisory Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustments, served 3½ years on the San Marcos City Council and almost 6 years on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Whew!
With few regrets Bill ‘always voted for what [he] thought was in the best interest of the city of San Marcos, even when the votes were unpopular with some people’, Bill wrote in a guest column in 2013.
His many awards, over a lifetime of achievements included, the Central Texas Elected/Appointed Official of the year by the Central Texas Chapter of the Texas Planning Association and the Planning Commissioner of the Year award from the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association.
Bill believed, “Managed growth and good businesses are key to our community prosperity.”
An adventurer at heart, Bill set his sights on a pilot’s license for his personal aircraft as well as earning the title of Captain of his own vessel. Captain Bill found refugee from his extensive list of duties, in the Gulf waters with his closest friends and family fishing for fun.
Bill is survived by his children Dana Taylor, Aaron Taylor and wife Kay, Brian Taylor and wife Julie, and Kathryn Taylor. Bill’s beloved grandchildren include Skyler King and Elizabeth, Hayden and Collin Taylor. In addition, Bill leaves his companion, Judy Schneider, brothers Jim Taylor (wife Sarah) and Joe Taylor (wife Cindie).
William G. “Bill” Taylors life will always be remembered for honorable achievements that will remain in the pages of San Marcos history. And so Godspeed to a treasured friend, neighbor and leader, we thank you for your commitment and service to our country and the city we love.
Family will receive friends at Pennington Funeral Home at 10 a.m., and a Celebration of Bill’s Life will follow at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016.
