HOMICIDE SUSPECT FOUND DEAD IN LOCKHART HOME

A man wanted in a double-shooting that left one man dead and another injured in San Marcos last week has been found dead in a home in Lockhart.

This morning, just after 10 a.m., members of the Hays County SWAT team in conjunction with personnel from the San Marcos Police Department, Hays County Narcotics Task Force, and the Hays County Crisis Negotiation Team attempted to serve two outstanding arrest warrants on Cyrus Louis Amaya (1/17/1994) at a residence in the 1000 Block of Commerce St. in Lockhart, TX.  The warrants for Amaya’s arrest were obtained on Wednesday and stem from the shooting which occurred in San Marcos last week. The warrants sought to charge Amaya with Capital Murder and Attempted Capital Murder.

The shootings took place on Monday, January 12 at approximately 11:15 p.m.  San Marcos Police Department responded to a 911 call of shots fired at the Townwood Apartment Complex.  When they arrived they found Earl Edward Clark deceased with multiple gunshot wounds in a common area of the complex in the 500 block of Linda Lane.  Jay Ryan Guerrero was also found shot multiple times with life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Central Texas trauma hospital.  He has since been released.

Police believe the victims met Amaya in San Marcos to deliver narcotics.  After meeting in the parking lot Amaya is believed to have taken the victims down a sidewalk to a secluded area, possibly to rob the victims of money and drugs. It was in this location that the shootings took place.

San Marcos Police Department Detectives have been working diligently since the day of the shooting to investigate all leads and identify potential suspects.  Several other agencies have provided critical assistance in this investigation including the Lockhart Police Department, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.  After obtaining the warrants for Amaya’s arrest, officers from the Hays County Narcotics Task Force and the Hays County SWAT team began attempting to locate Amaya so that he could be taken into custody.  Intelligence and surveillance led officers to the address in Lockhart where officers began attempts to communicate with Amaya at approximately 9 a.m. this morning.

After approximately two and a half hours of attempting contact with Amaya, officers from the Austin Police Department Bomb Squad placed a robot inside the residence.  Officers located Mr. Amaya inside the residence with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Prior to discovering Amaya’s body, officers did not hear any gunshots inside the home.  The Texas Rangers are assisting Lockhart police with the investigation into the shooting at the home in Lockhart.  The investigation into the shooting in San Marcos last week is ongoing.

The Hays County SWAT Team, the Hays County Crisis Negotiation Team, and the Hays County Narcotics Task Force are all cooperative teams staffed jointly by members of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and the San Marcos Police Department.
