Cinema Club’s Line-Up of March Screenings: Women Flimmakers
Cinema Club has announced a diverse slate of free films in March, hosted by an array of venues across San Marcos.
Cinema Club member Michelle Lombardo spoke to a common thread of the screenings: “March 8th is International Women’s Day — of course, our organization revels in women’s essential contributions to film-making year-round, but we’re particularly gratified by all the astonishing women filmmakers who will join us during the month of March.”
Natalia Rocafuerte, another Cinema Club member, elaborated, “Our ultimate mission is to spread social and political consciousness through motion pictures. We felt it important to celebrate the sparse, but growing, amount of amazing women making films.” The month’s line-up is as follows:
Wed, Mar 2, 6:30 PM
PRETTY VACANT, introduced by Lucha Silva, script supervisor. A 33-minute gem: black & white, set in ‘90s San Anto, steeped in Chican@ punk aesthetic. Afterward, the hour-long, extremely musical film selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry: CHULAS FRONTERAS, documenting cultural contours of la música norteña in the mid-70s (including in New Braunfels!) featuring Lydia Mendoza, Flaco Jiménez & Los Alegres de Teran.

SPRING BREAKERS, the latest from Harmony Korine, aptly timed, for Cinema Club’s every-2nd-Monday-of-the-month residency. $1 popcorn! (The director is male, despite first & last names that could pass for a woman’s, but the portrayal of Disney starlets’ moral slippage may yield an engaging gender discussion afterward.)
