Co-Founder Of The San Marcos Price Center Dies

“I heard this sad news at a lunch meeting today and it took my breath away, so hard to imagine San Marcos without him…” Melissa Derrick said.

Ron Jager, co-creator and co-founder of the San Marcos Price Center died Wednesday morning in his sleep.

Jager is survived by his wife, Marie and his daughter, Dea.

Members of the San Marcos Price Center said, “We are honored to be a part of Ron’s legacy and intend to celebrate his vision through the Price Center each day.”

Ron retired from Texas State University in 1993 and moved on to become a driving force in the renovation and re-purposing of the First Christian Church of San Marcos.

The church was built in 1893 and became vacant in 1988. With the help of the City of San Marcos and donations from residents and local businesses, the church was remodeled into what is known today as the Price Senior Center.

According to the Texas State University retired Faculty and Staff profile, “determined to implement the promise of the Price legacy, Ron and Marie circulated petitions, organized the Greater San Marcos Area Seniors Association, wrote letters to the local paper, lobbied the city council, and ultimately won a long-term lease from the City for the Price Seniors Center, with the Association assuming the full responsibility for renovation.”

According to the Price Center & Tea Room’s Facebook page, Ron and Marie were the minds behind several of San Marcos’s arts and cultural events and activities including Sights & Sounds of Christmas and Summer in the Park.

No information on funeral arrangements have been announced yet.

City Councilwoman, Melissa Derrick, posted this comment:

“I heard this sad news at a lunch meeting today and it took my breath away, so hard to imagine San Marcos without him. But how lucky we were that he lives on in so many things SO uniquely San Marcos. My sincere condolences to Dea Marie Perez and the family, and of course Marie. Much love and light to all who were lucky enough to know Ron!”
