San Marcos To Host Town Hall On Hazard Mitigation Grant
The City of San Marcos is hosting a Mitigation Town Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins, in order to gain public input on the City’s action plan for a $24 million Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Mitigation grant.
Attendees are invited to view exhibits with detailed information about the six potential projects under consideration for the funding. These projects are known as priority actions and were established by the City’s Office of Emergency Management in the 2018 San Marcos Hazard Mitigation Plan. They include:
- Establishing evacuation plans and improving routes;
- Disaster shelter improvements;
- Preservation of land in strategic upland and floodplain areas;
- Drainage improvements to properties that have been flooded multiple times;
- Improvements to flood and hazard warning systems; and
- Increasing the number of warning signs and barricades at low water crossings.
Attendees will be encouraged to take a survey to rank the six priority actions by importance to determine public priority. All surveys are in English and Spanish. The results of this survey will be reported to the City Council, who will ultimately determine the allocation of the funding in December.
City staff will be on-site throughout the day to answer questions with brief grant overview presentations being held at 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
