Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). The Gary Job Corps Center trains over 1400 students on its 800 acre campus in 17 vocations divided between the schools of Construction/Manufacturing and Heath & Support.  Additionally, students can receive their driver license, high school diploma, or high school equivalency.

San Marcos Chamber of Commerce “Business on the Green” Golf Tournament at Plum Creek Golf Course

The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the first “Business on the Green” Golf Tournament held at the Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle.  25 teams participated, First Lockhart Team brought home the Championship.

San Marcos Mayor John Thomaides welcomed the golfers thanking the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the Tournament and Plum Creek Golf Course, Kyle for hosting.

Gary Job Corps October Employee of the Month

Melinda Good, Senior Administrative Assistant for the Health and Wellness Department, was selected as the Gary Job Corps October Employee of the Month.

Melinda a native of Kyle, Texas came to Gary Job Corps in 2012, first starting as an Administrative Assistant in the Safety Department on to Maintenance then to be at her current position as Senior Admin Assistant with the Health and Wellness Department. Employee of the Month recommendation is as follows.

“Ms. Good is the kind of employee every supervisor dreams of.  The work she produces is superlative.  She is a self-starter, She is so organized she is able to complete everything for which she is responsible and then help out others.”

Brenda Brooks, Health and Wellness Supervisor stated, “She works with a positive attitude, which is not always easy when dealing with an angry parent, angry trainee or ME! (I am often heard fussing at my computer – IT can attest!). She is always happy to step in and lend a hand where needed, from working in security to search trainees as they come onto center, to finding a green products used to effectively clean the ice machine, to ordering supplies and entering work orders. She is a joy and a blessing.”

When asked what was the reason for her nomination Melinda said, “ I enjoy helping trainees to achieve their goals, over the past 6 years I have had many successes in watching the trainees reach their potential.  I wish that I would have known about Gary Job Corps years ago and the impact we have on the lives of young adults, I am thankful to be part of an organization to have that impact.”



11 Annual  Alzheimer’s Texas Walk 2018

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide and 5 locations in our region, inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions.

Over 25 teams, 100’s attended enjoying the Walk at the San Marcos Recreation Center along the San Marcos River.
