Gary Job Corps Receive Visit From TDCJ, Mitchell County And Volunteer At St. John Fiesta
Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.

TDCJ and Mitchell County Visit GJCC
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Wallace Unit, Mitchell County Judge, and Mitchell County Social Development Manager visited the Gary Job Corps Center’s (GJCC) Correction Academy on September 5, 2019, to speak about the employment opportunities at their correctional facility. Warden Linda Gonzales brought with her three corrections officer to speak about what GJCC cadets could expect on the job.
Lt. Tanner Mortensen and Officer Robert Sneed, which are both GJCC graduates spoke about their time at GJCC and how their instructors helped them to be successful in their careers.
Warden Gonzales highlighted the benefits of employment with TDCJ like staff housing, transportation, sick leave, and vacation. County Judge Mark Merrell and Social Development Manager Ricky Fritz highlighted what was offered in their community and recreational options.
St. John Fiesta Volunteers
The Gary Job Corps Center’s Corrections Academy volunteered at St. John Fiesta this Saturday and Sunday during the Labor Day weekend. Corrections students partnered with local law enforcement to keep the community safe, did traffic control and assisted with parking. At the event, there were multiple food booths, games, rides, petting zoo, DJ’s on the small stages, and nightly live music entertainment on the main stage by Art Tijerina Band and Marcos Orozco Y Grupo Rebelde.
Troublemaker Studios Tour
The Gary Job Corps Center’s H.O.P.E. Group (helping other people excel) was given a once in a lifetime opportunity to tour Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios. The studio’s Manager, Nixon Guerrero and Vice President of Marketing, Cecilia Conti provided a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the facility. Some of the highlights of the tour were the: exterior town movie set of Alita: Battle Angel (released this year), a special 3-D viewing of the Alita: Battle Angel movie trailer, a walkthrough of a green scene stage, special effects artist area, prop making and scene construction area, and storage of vehicles used in Death Proof.
