Harmful Algal Bloom On Lady Bird Lake Continues

Lady Bird Lake is experiencing a harmful algal bloom. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, is common in Austin’s creeks and lakes. This year, some of the algae in Lady Bird Lake has produced toxins.

Recent testing results reveal the continued presence of toxins. We’ve had positive algae samples from three locations: Red Bud Isle, Auditorium Shores and along Barton Creek between Barton Springs Pool and Lady Bird Lake.

Watershed Protection will continue testing Lady Bird Lake and Barton Creek on a weekly basis. The algae will naturally die off when cooler weather returns in the fall.

The public should continue to observe the same precautions as previously. If members of the public have questions or concerns, please have them call 3-1-1 or 512-974-2000. For more information and updates, visit austintexas.gov/Algae.
