Texas State releases coverage options for television, radio

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Athletics Department has announced several coverage options for fans looking to follow the Bobcats this season.

The Bobcats are excited to broadcast more than 80 events on ESPN’s new ESPN+ platform. For one low monthly price or yearly subscription Texas State fans can watch Bobcat home and road games of volleyball, football, and soccer.

Simply by downloading the ESPN app in Google Play, Apple store, or on a connected TV device (i.e. Fire Stick, Apple TV) you can watch the Bobcats anywhere at any time broadcasted by the leader in sports programming.

Leading the coverage of Texas State Football will be the play-by-play voice of Brant Freeman (Twitter @Brant_Freeman), a 17-year veteran in the television and radio industry. He has also covered the Bobcats since his time as a student at Texas State.

Alongside Freeman will be former standout Bobcat linebacker and five-year NFL veteran Joplo Bartu (Twitter @WhoIsJoplo.) Bartu started for the Atlanta Falcons and played with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Arizona Cardinals.

Finishing out the broadcast team will be sideline reporter Brooke Shoemaker (Twitter @bnshoemaker). Shoemaker is a former contributor with the Sports2Nite show in San Antonio and is an alumnus of Texas State.

When watching Texas State Volleyball fans will hear insights from Brant Freeman and Mick Haley (Twitter: @VolleyPA). Haley previously served for 17 seasons as the head coach of the University of Southern California women’s volleyball team.

He has also coached the U.S. Women’s National Team at the Olympics. Prior to this he served for 17 years as the head coach of the University of Texas women’s volleyball team.

The department also plans to broadcast many home men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, and softball games. Because of the conference wide agreement between ESPN and the Sun Belt, most road games for the Bobcats will also be available on the ESPN+ platform.

Fans can also listen to long-time voice of the Bobcats, Bill Culhane (Twitter: @BillCulhane22) on the Texas State Radio Network presented by Bud Light.

The radio network broadcasts Texas State football games on AM 1300 The Zone in the Austin/San Marcos area, on 930 AM The Talk in the greater San Antonio area, and on Texas State’s campus radio station 89.9 FM, the Other Side of Radio.

It also airs Texas State men’s basketball games on AM 1300 The Zone and 89.9 FM. Fans not close to a radio dial can listen to the audio broadcast online at TXST.com or by downloading the TuneIn App in the Google Play or Apple store.

Joining Culhane in the football booth will be Clint Shields, (Twitter @CShieldsRadio) who has previously been heard calling Bobcat women’s basketball games, and sideline reporter Karina Medellin (Twitter @Karina_Marlene) who previously brought you interesting notes about the games as the sideline reporter during the 2018 football season. Medellin is the Digital Media Coordinator for the Bobcat Club.

Texas State football fans can get a behind the scenes view of the football program by visiting the Jake Spavital “Game Time” Radio Show at Chimy’s on Tuesday nights hosted by Bill Culhane and Brant Freeman throughout the season.

In total, the show will be live from Chimy’s seven times with hour-long shows beginning at 6 p.m. The first show will air on Aug. 27. The remaining live shows will be on Sept. 3, 17, and 24, Oct. 8, Nov. 5 and 12.

Texas State football will open the 2019 season with a nationally televised midweek game at Texas A&M beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.

Texas State opens the home slate against the Wyoming Cowboys at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7. In addition to Wyoming, the Bobcats will host Georgia State (Sept. 21), Nicholls (Sept. 28), ULM (Oct. 10), South Alabama (Nov. 9), and Troy (Nov. 16).

Texas State volleyball play opens at Strahan Arena at noon on Aug. 30 against Liberty.

2019 Changes At Bobcat Stadium

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Fans coming to Bobcat Stadium this season can expect a few new additions and changes highlighted by a new brand of Texas State Football under the leadership of Jake Spavital.

In remembrance of the program’s 14 conference championships and two national championships, signage has been added on the West Side Complex inside Bobcat Stadium.

The display of honor will be highlighted on Sept. 6-7 during a weekend of recognition. Players and coaches will be hosted at a private unveiling the night before the game and then recognized during the game in front of their championship signage.

A fan favorite at Bobcat Stadium is the Coca-Cola Fun Zone. This kid friendly area, open throughout the game, has been upgraded with seating, a shaded area, and a new walking path for families to take advantage of.

This season members of the Bobcat Club can enjoy the pregame hospitality tailgate starting three hours prior to kickoff. Bobcat Club members can enjoy the festive environment of the Paul and Pat Gowens Family Pavilion inside Bobcat Stadium.

The pregame tailgate will also have live music at each home game. Fans can join the Bobcat Club in support of student-athlete scholarships and receive great benefits like access to the pregame tailgate at txstatebobcatclub.com or by calling 512-245-2272. 

Finally, vendors for the concession stand have been named. This season, football fans will be able to enjoy Chick-Fil-A, AJ’s Ranch Road Grill, and Steel City Pops.

Prices for season tickets start as low as $80 for one general-admission season ticket. Priority seating options are still available. Part of the purchase price for each ticket goes to the Bobcat Club, which continues to raise scholarship funds for Texas State student-athletes.

Turman Nets Lone Tally in Victory over Panthers

SAN MARCOS, TexasFor the second straight match, the Texas State soccer team came out on top in a 1-0 contest. On a hot Sunday afternoon, it was over Prairie View A&M at the Bobcat Soccer Complex with the lone tally coming from senior Genesis Turman.

The Bobcats improve to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2016 while the Panthers drop to 0-2.

The victory also extended TXST’s undefeated streak to 15 matches, setting a new program record and currently the longest active streak in the nation as of this afternoon.

Texas State also took over the longest active nationally streak for shutouts over a single opponent with its 13th consecutive shutout of PVAMU.

In the ninth minute, Texas State won a corner kick that Renny Moore sent into the box. Sarah Everett and Kaylee Davis both headed the ball before a Panther’s clearance attempt saw the ball landed in open space about eight yards out.

Davis passed the ball between a defenders legs and the goalkeeper dove but missed the ball.

Another defender attempted to clear the ball out of the box but it smacked Turman right in the stomach and ricocheted into the back of the net.

The Panthers had an opportunity to tie the match late in the 29th minute. Gina Zaval de Rojas flicked the ball over a charging Heather Martin. Her attempt did not have enough on it and Turman easily knocked the ball away from the goal.

Haley Groff nearly added to the score in the 32nd minute. However, the Panthers’ goalkeeper was right there to make the point blank stop.

Davis had a crack at goal from the far side nearly two minutes into the second half, but her attempt rolled past the left post.

PVAMU put an attempt on goal late in the 50th minute but saw Kathryn Budde make a diving stop to keep it a one-goal contest.

Davis and Moore both placed two more shots on frame in the second half with all of them being stopped by the keeper.

TXST held a 15-3 advantage in shots and 7-2 in shots on goal. Davis led all players with five shots and two of them being on frame. Moore also saw both of her shot attempts be on goal.

Martin played the first half to earn her second win of the season. Budde made one save over the final 45 minutes.

Next up on the schedule for the Bobcats is I-35 rival UTSA. The match takes place Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Park West Athletic Complex.

Bobcats Claim Season Opening Victory Behind Peschel’s First Collegiate Tally

SAN MARCOS, TexasFreshman Bailey Peschel scored the lone goal of the match as the Texas State soccer team defeated Incarnate Word 1-0 in the regular season opener at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

With the victory, the Bobcats are 1-0 on the season while the Cardinals begin the year 0-1. It also extended TXST’s undefeated streak to 14 matches, tying the program record that was set from Sept. 21 to Nov. 9, 2008.UIW controlled match for most of the first half. The Bobcats started to push press on the visitors late in the period. Genesis Turman throw the ball-in in the attacking third to Karlee Torisk. The freshman turned to beat a defender and sent in a cross that Peschel ran onto and slammed home into the bottom right corner for her first collegiate goal.

In the second half, the Bobcats were able to get into final third but unable to get many shots off. One of the best opportunities came in the 84 minute when Jordan Kondikoff sent a long ball down the middle of the field. Kaylee Davis ran onto the ball for a breakaway opportunity but the Cardinals goalkeeper made a diving stop right as the senior got her attempt off near the top of the box.

TXST outshot UIW 13-11 and held a slim 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Davis led all players with five shot attempts but only place one on frame. Sarah Everett put both of her shots off free kicks on goal.

Heather Martin started in goal and made one save in the first half to earn the victory. It is her 26th career win and moves her into sole place of second on the program’s career list, breaking a tie with Caitlynn Rinehart (2012-15). Kathryn Budde recorded two stops in the final 45 minutes.

The regular season opening weekend concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Prairie View A&M at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Prior to the contest, the 2018 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship team will be recognized.

Two Home Matches Kickoff 2019 Soccer Season

SAN MARCOS, Texas The Texas State soccer team opens the regular season this weekend with two home matches at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. First up on Friday is Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday against Prairie View A&M.

Live stats will be available for both matches while there won’t be a video stream for any home contest this season. Both matches will be broadcast on KTSW 89.9 FM with Connor MacKinnon and Jude McClaren on the call. Admission to all home matches is free.

Last Time Out
The Bobcats battled with Baylor, the 14th-ranked team in the nation, for all 90 minutes but fell 2-1 in TXST’s lone exhibition match. Ally Kewish netted the opening goal just over three minutes into the contest that came off a cross from Kaylee Davis.

In net, Heather Martin made three first half saves. Kathryn Budde played the second half and made two stops.

Preseason Awards
Five players were named to the All-Sun Belt Preseason Team, the most by any team in the conference. Kaylee Davis, Jordan Kondikoff, Heather Martin and Genesis Turman were named to the squad for the second straight year with Sarah Everett joining them after earning second team all-conference honors last season.

Davis and Martin were picked as the Sun Belt’s Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. The duo are coming off historic program seasons. Davis set a Bobcat mark with seven match-winning goals while her 18 total tallies tied the program mark and was tied for third in the nation. Martin posted new program records for GAA, save percentage and solo shutouts.

National Recognition
At the beginning of August, Davis was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The award is given to the most outstanding male and female soccer player each year. The Allen, Texas native is the first Texas State player ever to be selected to the watch list and first women’s Sun Belt honoree since 2011. She was also ranked No. 88 on Top Drawer Soccer’s Preseason National Top 100 that was released on Aug. 21.

Who’s Back
The Bobcats return 20 players from last year’s championship team including eight starters. Along with the five preseason all-conference honorees, other top returners are starters back are Addison Gaetano, Haley Groff, Jessica Pikoff, Renny Moore, Mackenzie Smith, Hannah Solano, Holly Streber, Budde and Kewish.

Who’s New
Texas State welcomes 10 true freshmen to the team. The class consists of four midfielders, three forwards, two defenders and one goalkeeper.

Scouting Incarnate Word
The Cardinals went 3-12-1 overall last season with all three victories and lone draw coming in conference play. They dropped two exhibition contests to UTRGV (1-0) and UTSA (2-0) and were selected to come in 11th in the 12-team Southland Conference.

Senior defender Amy Howard is the top returning goal scorer with two. Fourth other returners added one goal apiece. Andrea Reyes finished last season with a team-high three assists.

Cailey Croson appeared in five matches, starting two, last year. She allowed 10 goals for a 3.23 GAA while making 10 saves and posting a .667 save percentage.

All-Time vs. Cardinals
Friday will be the first regular season meeting between the programs. The teams have met twice for exhibitions in 2016 and 2018 with both taking place in San Antonio. The 2016 match ended in a 1-1 draw while last season’s exhibition saw TXST come out on top 3-0 behind two goals from Davis.

Scouting Prairie View A&M
The Panthers completed the 2018 season with a 7-10-2 overall record. They finished fifth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 5-3-2 mark. The conference’s preseason poll has PVAMU finishing fourth in the 11-team league. Before facing Texas State, the Panthers will take on Houston Baptist Thursday night on the road.

Jojo Bernal is the top offensive returner after netting five goals, two of which were match-winners. She led the team with 48 shots and placed 30 attempts on goal. Alexis Mack added two scores while Gina Zavala de Rojas added two assists along with one goal.

Quinn Josiah started all 19 matches between the posts in 2018. She surrendered 25 goals for a 1.28 GAA, made 123 saves and posted a .831 save percentage. The sophomore also recorded seven solo shutouts with six coming in conference play.

All-Time vs. Panthers
Texas State has not only won all 12 previous meetings against Prairie View, it has done so without allowing a goal. It is the tied for the longest active streak against a single opponent in the nation with North Carolina’s shutout run against Georgia Washington, although those teams haven’t met since 1994.

Last season’s meeting in Prairie View, Texas saw the Bobcats come out on top 3-0 as Kondikoff played a role in all three tallies. She put the first two goals into the back of the net in the first half and assisted on the final score from Groff in the 76th minute.

Bobcats host Meet the Cats event

SAN MARCOS, TexasThe Texas State volleyball team will host its annual Meet the Cats event at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Strahan Arena. The event will feature a scrimmage and the opportunity to meet members of the volleyball team and coaching staff. Refreshments will be available and are open to the public.

The Bobcats are receiving six votes in the AVCA Coaches’ Preseason Poll and will open the 2019 season Aug. 30 with a pair of matches vs. Liberty and No. 14 USC. The opening weekend will conclude with a 7 p.m. match Aug. 31 vs. Northern Iowa who is receiving 13 votes in the AVCA Coaches’ Preseason Poll.

TXST is favored to win the Sun Belt Conference after receiving 12 first-place votes in the West Division, while also sweeping the league’s specialty accolades with senior Cheyenne Huskey named the 2019 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, senior Micah Dinwiddie the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and sophomore Emily DeWalt tabbed as the 2019 Preseason Setter of the Year. Joining the trio on the 2019 Sun Belt Preseason team is sophomore Janell Fitzgerald.

Fans will have 16 opportunities to see the reigning Sun Belt Champions in action at Strahan Arena. After the opening weekend, the Bobcats will face Rice at 6 p.m. Sept. 3 and will return home for the annual Creeds & Crests Classic Sept. 19-21 that will feature matches against UTSA, George Washington, and Sam Houston State. The Bobcats conference home opener will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 vs. Louisiana.

Season tickets are general admission and are on sale now for $50. Special groups such as Bobcat Club donors, Texas State faculty and staff, recent alumni (2016-19) and T-Association members can receive a special discounted rate of $40 per season ticket.

Bobcat Track & Field to hold tryouts

SAN MARCOS, Texas Texas State track & field will hold a meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sep. 11 at the Hospitality Pavilion in Bobcat Stadium for walk-on hopefuls interested in trying out to be part of the 2019-20 team.

Interested students must attend the walk-on meeting and complete the following Tryout Form. Hopefuls must have a current physical or have a physician complete the physical form before the meeting.

The coaching staff will also need a complete current copy (front and back) of insurance cards for those trying out. It is mandatory to have proof of health insurance in order to try out for the team.

Forms will not be accepted without a copy of a current health insurance card to show proof of insurance.

Those looking to try out will need to submit the tryout form and physical to Coach Fabien Corbillon by Sep. 23. Late forms will not be accepted, nor will tryouts be granted without completed forms. Forms should be scanned and emailed to fec20@txstate.edu.

With completed forms submitted and meeting the academic requirements (full-time student with a 2.5 GPA), hopefuls can attend the meeting Time and date of the tryout will be discussed at the walk-on tryout meeting.

Anyone not attending the meeting will not be allowed to try out again until the following season as this is the only opportunity to join the track and field team for the 2019-20 season.
