Mendez Elementary Hosts Back To The Future Days

How do you describe a journey through time and space: a Time Machine experience or visiting the Twilight Zone?

It was much simpler, entertaining, and exciting to visit Mendez Elementary School during Back to the Future days this week.

Greeted by a replica DeLorean DMC-12 in the foyer and a handful of mad scientists in the school’s front office, guests could wander the classrooms and hallways to visit firsthand the time periods of the Aztecs, Colonial America, Ancient China, the 70’s, the Post War Era, and the Roaring 20’s.

In the cafeteria, guest lecturers from the Swingtime Dance Company were demonstrating dances such as the Charleston, Jitter Bug, the Bop, the Twist, and the audience joining in with the Hand Jive.

Some classrooms drew attention with delicious smells wafting, where students and guests could enter to enjoy a spread of ancient Aztec food or the delights of a French Bistro.

In the gymnasium, students were introduced to the health benefits of ritual Tai Chi from the ancient Chen Village.

In low lights with a background of soft music, the students stretched, bent, and ultimately relaxed to the directions given by the Tai Chi master.

After an immersion in Picasso’s art, Walt Disney’s animation, hula hoops and flower power, there was a bit of letdown in returning to reality.

But as they learned in Colonial America, it is now time for Mendez Elementary students to start making their mark in history.
