Spring Break San Marcos Style

With Spring Break now upon us, how will San Marcos’ citizens choose to spend their precious time?

Although many will brave Interstate 35, mitigating toward Austin’s overcrowded venues, to witness wisps of celebrities, or score free beverages, those who wish to stick closer to home will be rewarded.

The enormity of SXSW is undeniable. As San Marcos continues to grow in size, so must its own events. The rise of SMFest could be perceived as San Marcos’ own citywide, Spring Break event.

Similar to SXSW, SMFest will showcase both film and music. The festival kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m to 7 p.m., March 18, at Zelicks. Following this, viewers can walk over to Kiva, Momma’s Gold Crown Billiards, Stonewall, Valentino’s, or Wake the Dead Coffeehouse for various performances; SMFest will sprawl across the Downtown Square (and some), giving audiences opportunities to relax outside between sets or showings.

On Saturday, March 19, The Bower Bird Stage Showcase will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Bower Bird Antiques & Curiosities, a shop that’s inventoried with tattered lace, vintage necklaces, mermaid tapestries, and ceramic dog statues.

Additional evening events will be held at Kiva, Momma’s Gold Crown Billiards, Stonewall, Valentino’s, Wake the Dead Coffeehouse, and Root Cellar Bakery. By Sunday, March 20, the festival will wrap up at Kiva and Valentino’s.

How else can San Marcos quench a festivalgoer’s desires? There’s likely no better time to stop by The Hitch and enjoy the local food trucks. In particular, MamboFreeze boasts 200+ shaved ice flavors, non-fat frozen yogurt, and award winning all-natural smoothies. Furthermore, with three different types of tamales available, (all vegan and low fat), Spring Break bliss is only a peeled husk away.

On Sunday, when The Hitch is closed, wanderers may consider stopping by Tantra Coffeehouse for a couple of breakfast tacos or specialty coffee beverages. The house routinely displays new, local artwork, and the Beer Garden has plenty of seating.

Finally, San Marcos’ River flow and height should be slightly higher due to recent rainfall. Given the current forecast, floating will be ideal between March 13 and March 15.

Whether your aim is to relax or be entertained this Spring Break, San Marcos will provide equal outlets for both. Take a step outside, and you’re there!
